Writing A Resume Objective Statement

Filed under: Scaffolding — Admin @ 3:38 pm

By Jason Kay

A resume is one of the most important tools that you can use in expediting your job search. It is the information that you would use to convince a hiring manager that you deserve an interview. It is not so much about your experience, but about how you word it that is important. Your resume is basically your personal advertisement to the employer to convince them they should hire you.

There are many parts and types of resumes. When you set out to put your resume together, you will need to research the type of resume that best fits your career history. Once you have chosen a resume type, you will need to gather all of your information.

The first part of your resume will include your contact information and name. The next portion of your resume will go one of two ways. You will either write an objective statement, or write a positioning statement. In years past, the objective was always the first part of the resume under the contact information. In recent years things have changed, and some experts recommend using a positioning statement instead.

What Is an Objective?

Simply put, an objective statement tells the employer what you are looking for in a job for which you would like to be hired. Objective statements are controversial these days, because tight job markets give employers a lot of people from which to choose. A lot of employers would rather hear what you have to offer them rather than hearing what you want.

If you decide to go ahead and use an objective statement in your resume, then you need to understand a few basic points. State your objective sentence in a clear and concise manner. Use active verbs rather than passive verbs to describe your objective. Make sure that your objective is specific and does not use any generalities. If you say, ‘I would like an administrative job using my customer service abilities,’ that does not give the employer anything specific to evaluate you by. A better example goes something like this, ‘Executive level administrative professional with seven years experience in process improvement seeks to join a company facing the challenges of the new millennium head-on.’ This tells the employer exactly what your goal is and what type of job you are searching for.

What Is a Positioning Statement?

A positioning statement is similar to an objective, except that it focuses more on what you have to offer a potential employer. You will want to follow some of the same advice that goes with an objective. Use action words. This lends power and creates a feeling in the employer that you will be an achiever in the organization. Here is one example: ‘Diligent achiever, adept at collaborating with customer to produce quality content relevant to the end user.’ Notice the high powered action words, diligent and adept. These words will reinforce the idea that this applicant will produce positive results.

Whether you choose to use an objective or a positioning statement, make sure that your resume stands out from the crowd. If you follow these recommendations, you are much more likely to get the job.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:36 pm

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

US House committee approves daylight saving time amendment

Thursday, April 7, 2005

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee passed an amendment on Wednesday to extend daylight saving time by two months. The bipartisan measure is sponsored by Representative Fred Upton, Republican of Michigan, and Representative Ed Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts.

“The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use,” Representative Ed Markey said. Markey also supported the measure by pointing out the business benefits. “There’s more economic activity, because people feel they can walk around safely,” he said.

“Extending daylight-saving time makes sense, especially with skyrocketing energy costs,” Rep. Fred Upton said.

The bill extends daylight saving time to begin on the first Sunday in March and to end on the last Sunday in November. Daylight saving time currently begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the first Sunday in October.

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that extending daylight saving time would save 10,000 barrels of oil per day. The United States consumes approximately 20 million barrels of oil per day.

The House is planning to approve the energy bill to which the amendment was attached in several weeks. Several other amendments to the bill are still being debated.

Greek demonstrators protest austerity measures

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:35 pm

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Protestors in Greece, rallying against austerity measures, have clashed with police in the capital of Athens.

Some people participating in the rally — attended by thousands of teachers and students — threw stones at riot police, who responded by employing pepper spray, although the BBC described the protests as being generally peaceful. Demonstrators say that a recent austerity proposal, which is to include pension cuts and an increase in taxes, will adversely affect the education sector.

Teachers, along with hospital workers and public servants, have started a two-day strike over the measures. Also present were 150 members of the armed forces, who protested having their bonuses lowered.

Meanwhile, earlier on Tuesday, approximately a hundred demonstrators with the Communist Party broke through locks at the Acropolis and hung up banners saying: “Peoples of Europe — Rise Up”.

Communist Member of Parliament Nikos Papaconstantinou commented: “We want to send a message to the farthest reaches of Greece and Europe. Similar measures that eliminate social security are taken across Europe. But popular anger will rattle imperialist organisations.”

The austerity plan comes shortly after the Greek government said it would introduce spending cuts to obtain a loan package by the EU and International Monetary Fund, aimed at helping Greece recover from a financial crisis.
