Youths in the Norfolk town of Caister-on-Sea, near Great Yarmouth, England, have been banned from purchasing “squirty bottles” of ketchup, and eggs after a number of complaints from residents in the area. The move, which is backed by the Norfolk Police, is aimed at reducing the number of anti-social incidents occurring in the area. Sergeant Andy Brown, of the Norfolk Police, has said that no further complaints have been received since the ban came into force.
I know it sounds a bit daft, but it has made a difference because we’ve had no more reported incidents since the supermarkets came on board. | ||
While squirting ketchup itself is not a criminal offence, the damage that it can cause, such as removing paint from cars or houses, is often enough to bring charges of criminal damage. Sgt Brown said that there were “about a dozen complaints from residents, some of them elderly, about people squirting ketchup over doors, windows and vehicles.” Martin Bailie, a spokesperson for Lidl supermarkets, has defended his staff’s actions, saying “the stores’ staff were [already] challenging youngsters who were trying to bulk buy these things. It wasn’t that we haven’t been selling eggs and ketchup to youths, but have been careful about who we have sold them to, and we are glad it has been making a difference.”

The Premier of the Australian state of Queensland has announced that the state will have its election on Saturday, March 21. In an address on YouTube, Anna Bligh of the Australian Labor Party said that she called the election due to the state of the economy and to stabilise the government.
“It’s time for Queensland to settle this election. It’s time to settle the speculation. So that government, business and the community can get on with the task at hand and not be distracted and destabilised by looming elections,” Ms Bligh said in the statement.
Ms Bligh has recently denied that she would call an early election.
“I have always said that I want my government to run the full term and I have not changed my view on this lightly,” she said.
“After 11 years in office, Ms Bligh only cares about one job: her own,” said Lawrence Springborg head of the Liberal National Party (LNP) and the Leader of the Opposition. “Queensland deserves better. Over the next 27 days, the LNP will build on our vision for the Queensland we all deserve.”
The Opposition need to pick up at least twenty seats from the government to overcome the significant Labor majority and a number of independents.
“It is a sad legacy of economic management and mismanagement of the Labor Government that after 11 years of the rivers of gold, our state is broke,” Mr Springborg said. “It’s a little bit like lighting a fire and then running around and wanting credit for putting it out.”
A March 21 election gives candidates twenty six day to campaign. This is just within the legal requirements. The Queensland Electoral Act (1992) requires the election campaign to last between 26 and 56 days.
The Queensland Greens nominated an environmental lawyer to run against treasurer Andrew Fraser.
“We can tackle climate change and create long-term jobs, but Labor can’t see that because they are blinded by the interests of their big donors – the urban development and coal industries,” says Larrisa Waters, the Greens candidate for Mt-Cootha.
“The Greens want to give the community and the environment a voice back in State Parliament.”
“The current stance taken by both major parties, in relation to Daylight Saving in Queensland, is outdated, out of touch and inflexible. South East Queenslanders are frustrated that neither major party is currently prepared to explore options on the issue of Daylight Saving”, DS4SEQ party leader Jason Furze told Wikinews on January 30. DS4SEQ is a single-issue party, focused on the debate on daylight saving time.
Indigenous activist Sam Watson will be contesting the South Brisbane electorate which is currently held by the premier. He will represent the Socialist Alliance. Watson campaigned heavly for indigenous rights since the 1970s and was a community spokesperson following the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee in 2004.
Top Tips for Making Crafts At Home With Your Children, and Paper Free Mache Recipe
by
mmnewbold
Encouraging your child’s creativity at home by creating craft items is very beneficial for their mental development. Children can explore different textures, shapes and patterns, and discover how to put ideas into action by handling different materials, and sticking and gluing them together. But lets not forget, it’s great fun and a good way to spend some quality time focussing your attention on your children.
Buying materials from a craft store can be expensive, so why not start a junk/scraps box. All you need is a box or a large storage bag that you keep in a cupboard ready to store your household junk. It’s easy to start collecting and is surprising how quickly your junk box or bag will fill up. Just remember that every time you are in the kitchen preparing meals, keep all the empty boxes, tubs or tubes you normally throw away, and add these to your craft box. Also, whenever you come across any interesting items, you can put them in your box ready for when you want to make one of our crafts. Collect lots of items, from different shaped boxes, cardboard tubes, shiny paper, drinking straws, plastic bottle tops, and clean ice-lolly sticks. Craft shops stock an extensive range of craft materials. Why not visit your local store and buy a selection of items to store in your box. Look out for cheaper end of lines, bargain buckets, and reduced price crafts that have damaged packaging. If you look out for bargains, or just buy one or two inexpensive items per week, you will quickly build up a good stock of craft materials in your home craft box. Look out for feathers, pom poms, wiggly eyes, wool, material, tissue paper, coloured paper and glitter. Even at Christmas you could collect lots of shiny things to use, including small bits of tinsel, wrapping paper, ribbons, gift tags, parcel twine, and shiny foil sweet wrappers. While out shopping, check out material and fabric shops for fabric cut-offs and scraps, odd buttons, and for cheap balls of wool or yarn. Kitchen shops often sell cheap wooden spoons. You can make a whole family of spoon puppets just by sticking fabric and wool onto wooden spoons and drawing on faces with felt-tipped pens. Don’t forget to always have lots of paint, coloured crayons, glue and sticky tape at home! Here is a recipe for home-made Paper Mache. This is so simple to make, but can be very messy indeed, so make sure you cover up with an apron, coverall, or wear some old clothes that you don’t mind getting messed up. Once made, paper mache does not keep very well, so only try to make as much as you think you will need for the day. Paper Mache You will need – Large bowl, Newspaper, Pva glue, Water, Brush, Balloon. To Make – Pour Pva glue into a bowl, add a small amount of water and mix. Cover your balloon with the glue and layers of newspaper, keep pasting on the glue with a brush. Tip – Prepare newspaper before you start to make the paste, tear up the newspaper into strips and leave in a pile ready. You can use wallpaper paste instead of PVA glue. Children must be supervised at all times. This craft and a lot more are available, along with photographs, in full colour, in our free Messy Tots mini-craft book by instant download. Results of the second phase in an ongoing major study of the spiritual lives of college students was released Wednesday, April 13 by a research center at UCLA. The study is a groundbreaking attempt to gain insight into the spiritual lives and concerns of students and improve how faculties and administrators at US colleges and universities address this part of their students’ lives.
The study, named The Spiritual Life of College Students, was conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), a research center of higher education in the United States. HERI is based in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS) at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
HERI also produces a widely-cited annual Survey of Entering Freshman through its Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) program.

In order to put the cannabis drug (marijuana) out of reach of minors, the Canadian federal government announced a bill to legalise cannabis for the age group of eighteen and above, on Thursday. The bill would allow adults to possess cannabis publicly, previously a criminal offence.
Canada’s health minister Jane Philpott tweeted, “Today we tabled new legislation to legalise, strictly regulate, and restrict access to cannabis. Our goal: keep it out of the hands of youth, and profits out of the hands of criminals.” The Canadian government, via their official website, explained cannabis is available illegally, and their measures to stop it did not work. Criminal organisations are making money selling cannabis. Under-aged people can obtain the drug easily; they said, “it is easier for our kids to buy cannabis than cigarettes.”
The bill allows provinces and territories to set the age limit above eighteen. In order to prevent criminal gangs from making a profit, selling the drug needs a license permitting its sale. Adults can purchase the drug online from a licensed producer if a retail shop is not available in the province.
Adults can carry up to 30 g (slightly over an ounce) of cannabis and grow at most four cannabis plants at home, for personal use. The plants should be no taller than a metre, the bill proposed. Selling cannabis to minors would be a specific criminal offence.
The legislation requires parliamentary approval and royal assent. If passed, the bill would be under effect by July 2018, the government said. Health and safety experts and law enforcement were consulted before proposing the legislation. Except for medical purposes, possession of the drug remains illegal until the bill is passed. Regardless of the status of the bill, import and export of the drug would be illegal.
Previously when the government increased the taxes on cigarettes to discourage citizens from smoking, a black market for cigarettes developed.
Along with legalising cannabis, the bill would also permit the police officials to use tools like oral fluid drug screeners to detect if drivers are under the influence of the drug. Zero tolerance against drivers under influence of drugs is proposed. The government would also implement a public awareness campaign on the perils of driving under the influence of drugs.
The government still working on the restrictions. Lawmaker and former police chief Bill Blair said, “We do accept that more important work remains to be done.” If the bill is passed, Canada would be the second country to legalise cannabis completely. Uruguay is the first. Some countries, such as Germany, allow medical use of cannabis, but recreational use is prohibited.
How do you stop Christmas trees from dropping needles?
by
Graham Willett
How many times after Christmas is over and you have long gotten rid of your Christmas tree have you found that you are still battling with dropped Christmas tree needles? How great would it be if there was a solution to this problem? The short answer would be to simply buy a Christmas tree that was devoid of any needles but then you would be paying for nothing more than a skeleton of a Christmas tree and that would not be very Christmas like at all. If you are going to own a Christmas tree, you are going to have needles and Christmas tree needles are going to drop and get all over your carpet as well as get stuck in your foot from time to time.
There are many quick fixes to the problem of dropped Christmas tree needles but rarely do they work with any effectiveness. One technique is to apply a glue type substance that can be sprayed on. Another scheme is to manipulate the trunk of the tree so it is at an angle that will optimise water consumption. The Christmas tree runs into a problem when this is done because the manipulation leads to it actually receiving less water. Some people will decide that an artificial Christmas tree is the answer to their problem of dropped Christmas tree needles. This solves one problem but creates another one: how can there be a Christmas without the familiar Christmas tree smell? Fake Christmas trees do not have a Christmas tree smell!
A better way than having to use glues and mangling the trunk of a Christmas tree is by hiring a Christmas tree. A hired Christmas tree is both shaped well (thanks to diligent pruning) and indigenous to the local area. When a hired Christmas tree is hired a team of workers deliver it to your home and you decorate it as you see fit. The Christmas tree will be a live tree. It is potted and has a complete root system. Live Christmas trees (unlike cut trees) do not loose their needles. When you no longer require the services of your hired Christmas tree the Christmas tree hire service workers arrive to take your tree from you. But do not worry for the fate of your hired Christmas tree. It will be planted with other hired Christmas trees to form a nature area to be enjoyed by people and animals. Because, as previously mentioned, the trees are indigenous animals are not harmed in any way that can be attributed to the introduction of a non-native species. When the tree has been returned to the wild it begins rewarding the environment by offsetting your carbon footprint. As a matter of fact, if everyone who bought a Christmas tree in the United Kingdom would hire a Christmas tree the after effects would be a carbon footprint offset by eight million tonnes each year.
If your worry is a Christmas tree that drops needles all over your carpet you could get out your glue and saw to make the necessary changes but who wants a Frankenstein Christmas tree? Who wants a product that you have to modify so much? Why not make Christmas easy on you and the environment? Hire a Christmas tree.

The summit of more than 70 African and European Union nations has opened in Portugal with an acknowledgement that conflicts, human rights violations and poverty continue to pose challenges. Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates opened the summit on today, calling it a meeting of equals in a community of nations that shares a historic duty.
The Portuguese leader promised a frank and open discussion with no taboos. This was seen as a reference to issues such as conflicts and human rights violations in Africa as well as historical injustices in Euro-African relations.
The chairman of the African Union, Ghana’s President John Kuofor, said the relationship between Africa and Europe during the past 500 years has been unhappy, characterized by the slave trade, colonialism and apartheid. He said a new relationship is needed to correct what he called a historic inhumanity.
“The real significance of the Africa-EU summit must therefore be to lay the foundations of a new partnership based on mutual respect and a genuine commitment to pursue the mutual interests of our two continents,” he said.
The leaders are to establish a new strategic partnership with eight priority areas. These include peace and security, governance and human rights, economic development, environmental degradation, migration and trade.
The President of the African Union Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare, said the relationship must avoid charity, paternalism and false promises.
He says no one will solve Africa’s ills for it. Africa must play the game of globalization but not unilateral globalization based solely on market forces. Konare said the new partnership must develop ways to address this issue.
Efforts to hold the Africa-EU summit have been thwarted for the past five years by a dispute over Zimbabwe‘s human rights record. President Robert Mugabe‘s invitation this year prompted a boycott by Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain, Zimbabwe’s former colonial ruler.
Human rights activists have protested that summit leaders are ignoring suffering and oppression on the continent. And opponents of globalization said the summit’s approach to boosting trade would aggravate poverty.
European leaders have been intent on holding the meeting because of competition for Africa’s markets coming from China, India and other emerging nations.
