An amphibious vehicle belonging to the United States Marines capsized and sank to the floor of the Del Mar boat basin, California at 1130 PST (1930 UTC) resulting in one death and three injures.

Three instructors and three students were conducting driver training when the vehicle capsized and sank, trapping them inside. Three injured individuals were transported to hospital and two were uninjured. The deceased Marine was rescued at around 1415 PST and was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1447 PST. Oxygen was being pumped into the vehicle for hours in an attempt to keep the Marine alive.

Captain Daniel J. Thomas revealed that “There will be a thorough investigation into this mishap that occurred.” He continued, “[there will be] reports that come, lessons learned in terms of preventing anything like this from happening.” Major Thomas said that training would not be stopped, but “We’re going to take a look at this and the commander will then make a decision before anything goes back into place to make sure any safety briefing that need to be given are conducted.”

The identity of the dead Marine has not yet been revealed; the family have yet to have been notified.

Singer Britney Spears faces hit and run charges

Saturday, September 22, 2007

The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office said yesterday that pop music super-star Britney Spears was facing charges for a hit and run offence and driving without a valid drivers’ license.

Charges were filed following an accident in which police allege Spears smashed her car into another vehicle in a parking area in August of 2007.

She could face a maximum of six months in jail and US$2,000 in fines if convicted.

A group of paparazzi recorded a video Britney steering her car into another vehicle on August 6 as she tried to pull into a parking spot in a Studio City lot.

Kim Robard-Rifkin was the owner of the other car and she filed a police report three days after the accident. The 59-year-old nurse found out that it was Spears who ran into her car after watching a video on a celebrity website.

Robard-Rifkin said, “I simply want my car fixed, the same as I would fix somebody’s car if I had done that.”

Spears will be arraigned on October 10.

Can International Shipping Containers be sent Less than Full?

by

Leon Belenky

International shipping containers, as anyone whos seen them knows, are huge. Many companies and individuals need to ship items to international ports, but havent nearly enough of a load to fill one of these containers. As you may have guessed, this is something that cargo shippers have dealt with for literally hundreds of years. It is certainly possible to take advantage of shipping by sea without having to send an entire cargo containers worth of goods. In fact, some companies not only encourage this, they work with it every day.

Logistics companies handle jobs large and small. In many cases, individuals who are relocating to another nation have to send most of their possessions by sea to their new residence. These shipments can be sent in international shipping containers, even if the load doesnt fill the entire container. Companies treat these shipments no differently than any other and youre given the same quality of service and attention to detail that large shippers receive. In some cases, you may find that the logistics company you use to ship is also the best choice for getting your belongings to your permanent address.

Sending goods in international shipping containers is only a part of what logistics companies do. The best logistics companies also ship goods overland, by train and other means. Being able to provide this service requires a great deal of experience and connections in the nation where the cargo is being sent. Make sure you get a company that offers all of these services and that they treat their smaller shippers with the same degree of respect and with the same commitment to customer service that they offer their largest customers.

NYSE to merge with Archipelago; NASDAQ to buy Instinet

Sunday, April 24, 2005

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced last Wednesday that it has agreed definitively to merge with Chicago-based Archipelago Exchange (ArcaEx) and form a new publicly traded, for-profit company known as NYSE Group. This announcement was followed two days later by NASDAQ®, which independently announced a definitive agreement to purchase Instinet Group.

Archipelago and Instinet are innovative e-trading (electronic trading) companies, and formerly were the two largest American rivals to NYSE and NASDAQ, in recent years taking increasingly large portions of their market share. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other regulatory agencies still have to review and approve the transactions, particularly with respect to US securities law and antitrust law, in order to ensure that the marketplace remains lawful and competitive.

Other pending issues for NASDAQ include obtaining the approval of Instinet shareholders, as well as customary closing conditions. NYSE must obtain the approval of its members and Archipelago shareholders.

These changes, a reaction to increased e-trading competition and a changed regulatory environment, will result in NASDAQ and NYSE trading each other’s shares and attempting to grab market share, which many hope will drive down transaction costs and ultimately benefit consumers. However, at least one commentator, Dan Ackman writing in Forbes, has noted that the trading commission at the NYSE currently averages less than a nickel (US$0.05) per share, and was less enthusiastic about potential efficiency gains from electronic trading at the exchange.

The transactions are also intended to make the two leading American stock exchanges more globally competitive with such exchanges as the London Stock Exchange, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the Toronto Stock Exchange, and the Australian Stock Exchange located in Sydney.

Emirates jet tail strikes runway during takeoff at Melbourne airport

Saturday, March 21, 2009

According to officials, an Airbus A340 jetliner registered to the Emirates airline struck its tail upon the runway as it took off from Melbourne Airport in Melbourne, Australia Saturday. More than 225 people were on board.

Flight EK407, which had departed for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, had to circle around the airport for 45 minutes, dumping fuel, before making an emergency landing.

There were no reports of injuries, although some of the runway lights were knocked out during the incident.

“It [the aeroplane] took off very steeply, the tail touched the end of the runway, and it went up, stabilised and came back,” a Melbourne Airport spokesman told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

One passenger, Catherine Edmunds, described the event at terrifying while speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“We did land successfully, thankfully, and the plane was surrounded by paramedics and fire engines. It was terrifying,” Edmunds said. “I’d hate to go through it again.”

The Emirates airline stated that they had dispatched a safety team to Melbourne to investigate the accident.

Aviation authorities from Australia also launched their own investigation. Ian Brokenshire, a spokesman for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, announced that “we will be looking at the flight data records, getting data off that, interviewing the crew, interviewing the company representatives, inspecting the runway and aircraft.”

The plane’s passengers were given alternate flights to Dubai.

Botox from Canada – Why Get It?

by

Vikram Kumar

If you are looking for Allergan Botox then consider going to a Canada site where you can purchase this product. Those who are looking to appear younger will like the effect of Botox when they use it. This is one product that works well when it comes to anti-aging. It works even better, some will say, than plastic surgery because it is noninvasive and does not call for a recovery time. Those who want to look younger can do this right away with good results each time. There is no recovery time, a person can get Botox in the afternoon and go out to dinner that night. This is the fountain of youth product that people today are using.

Because Allergan Botox is relatively cheap, especially when compared to plastic surgery, anyone can use it. When it comes to Botox Canada, it is even cheaper. This means that even the ordinary person who just wants to look younger can do so. Because society reacts more positively to those who appear younger and look their best, a lot of ordinary people are using this sort of product.

When people think of things to look younger, like facelifts, they think of celebrities who get this done. Celebrities have been getting facelifts for as long as there has been an industry to celebrate them. Because they rely so much on their appearance before the cameras, it makes sense for them to maintain that appearance. As they are in the field of entertainment and their job is to look good and entertain people, they choose to do what they can to continue to look good so that they can continue to work. However, even celebrities are using Botox. They find that this gives them a more natural look than the plastic surgery.

The thing about Botox is that it is not permanent. But this is a good thing. It can be used again and again to retain the appearance of youth but the person does not have to worry that they are undergoing some sort of cosmetic enhancement that is going to totally alter their appearance. It erases time on the face in such a way that it looks natural, that people who see you do not see that you have had \”work done.\” This product can be purchased through a Canadian site and helps increase margins for physician s, medical spas, clinics and other health organizations

If you want to buy

LHC sets new particle energy acceleration record

Monday, November 30, 2009

The world’s Large Hadron Collider accelerated its protons to an energy of 1.18 TeV at 00:44 GMT+1 today. This set a new world record, surpassing the 0.98 TeV record set at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory‘s Tevatron collider, which was commissioned in Chicago in 2001. The event came ten days after the LHC collider restart.

Yesterday at 20:48 UTC, one proton beam was accelerated to 1050 GeV (1.05 TeV) in LHC. Three hours later, the next record was set by two beams of opposite direction, 1.18 TeV each.

The CERN researchers are delighted with the quick progress and are happy with the excellent performance of the machine. Steve Myers, director of accelerators and technology at the Cern particle physics laboratory near Geneva, commented on LHC optimistically, comparing it with the twenty-year old Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP): “I was here 20 years ago when we switched on Cern’s last major particle accelerator, LEP. I thought that was a great machine to operate, but this is something else. What took us days or weeks with LEP, we’re doing in hours with the LHC. So far, it all augurs well for a great research programme.”

High proton beam energy is needed to get many proton-proton collisions. However, all elements of the system need to be monitored carefully, and sudden energy increases are undesirable to ensure that the machine operates within normal parameters, in order to avoid a repeat of the superconductive magnet quench and consequent six-tonne liquid helium leak catastrophe on September 19, 2008, nine days after the first start. The damage caused by the leak, and the subsequent repairs and upgrades to the LHC that were needed, caused a delay of more than a year in the commissioning of the collider.

“We are still coming to terms with just how smoothly the LHC commissioning is going. It is fantastic. However, we are continuing to take it step-by-step, and there is still a lot to do before we start physics in 2010” said Cern’s director general Rolf Heuer.
