‘Recession gardens’ replace victory gardens

Sunday, March 29, 2009

With the United States in a recession, more and more people are looking for ways to spend less money and get a better bargain at the same time. In a time where prices are higher, ‘recession gardens’ are becoming increasingly popular, echoing the victory gardens which were planted during World War I and World War II which helped to reduce the stress and pressure of food shortages.

“There is more interest in vegetable gardens similar to the victory gardens. Because of the economy, they are being called recession gardens,” said a master gardener who volunteers at Ohio State University‘s Extension Service office, Fred Hanacek.

The new fad recently caught on in Iowa where families have began to plant the recession gardens to save money in the produce sections of supermarkets, especially organic fruits and vegetables. Public News Service quotes the National Gardening Association (NGA) as saying that they expect a nearly 20% increase in personal home garden across the U.S.. Some of the increase is also due to people wanting to know what goes onto their vegetables and in their foods.

“I do believe you’ll find there’s an extra expense in actually producing your own food, but the food quality you get is far better than what you can purchase in a store,” said Beverly Bernhard a veteran gardener from Iowa.

The new trend has also gotten the attention of U.S. president Barack Obama who recently stated that he plans to plant a vegetable garden at the White House. It will be the first vegetable garden to be planted at the White House in over 20 years. The last time a garden of this kind was planted at the White House was in World War II when Eleanor Roosevelt planted her Victory Garden. In 1800, former U.S. president John Adams is reported to have planted the first White House garden. Andrew Jackson went a bit further, building a greenhouse.

Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States, broke ground on the new garden with the fifth grade class at Bancroft Elementary located in Washington, D.C. on March 20. The garden, which will be 1,100 square feet and an ‘L’ shape, will be located on the White House’s South Lawn and the Obamas plan to grow over 55 varieties of vegetables.

“Let’s hear it for vegetables. Let’s hear it for fruits,” yelled Mrs. Obama as they broke ground on the garden. “I’ve been able to have my kids eat so many different things that they would have never touched if we had bought them at a store,” she added. Mrs. Obama also said that it will be the entire family’s responsibility to maintain the garden, including the U.S. president.

Many vegetables grow easily, without having to do a lot of work to maintain them. Some examples are lettuce and zucchini. The NGA says at least 9 million Americans will grow vegetable gardens for the first time ever in 2009. An estimated 43 million Americans will plant their own personal vegetable gardens this year.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

What To Expect From Your Std Clinic Visit

Filed under: Skin Care — @ 3:13 pm

By Tim Leach

So you havent been as careful as you should, and youre contemplating your first ever visit to an STD clinic to get tested? Its understandable that youd be nervous, but it really isnt as bad as youd imagine. Heres what you can expect from your visit, so youll know the general procedure.

First steps

First of all you have to pick a place to be tested. In the US, your personal doctor or gynaecologist can administer STD tests, or you could drop into a planned parenthood or public health clinic. However you plan on doing it, call the clinic before you undertake your STD test some states need a physicians review of a test before it can be administered. As well as this, with the various sexually transmitted diseases around, its a good idea to know whether the clinic you plan on visiting is equipped to deal with the STD youre worried you may have.

One question I hear a lot is as to whether STD tests are anonymous. The answer is that it depends on the state. In many places you can have a number allocated, rather than your real name, but bear in mind that some states positive test results to be reported (mainly HIV) as they are breaking the law not to, in this instance your anonymity will be broken.

In the Clinic

When you arrive at the STD clinic, theyll need you to fill in some paperwork. This will generally cover your general health as well as your sexual history. Be honest this is vital. The form will also ask if you would like an HIV test by law they have to ask you. Remember though, in some states a positive diagnosis will need to be reported.

Once youve completed the paperwork, the actual exam will begin. Youll be lead into a backroom and allowed to change into a medical gown. At this point youll begin a face to face discussion with your doctor covering all the areas dealt with previously, but allowing you to give more details, and helping the doctor figure out what is most likely to be in need of checking. Once again, its vital to be honest here, otherwise important things can be overlooked, and necessary STD tests may not be administered.

After this, there are many STD tests that may be required, but they broadly can be divided into 2, dependent on whether they need a sample or not.

Visual STD Testing

These are diagnoses that can be made just my looking at the affected area. Examples of this type of sexually transmitted disease include genital warts, pubic lice and genital herpes (if youre currently suffering from an outbreak).

Physical STD Testing

Physical STD testing covers any disease that cannot be detected purely by looking, and this includes the more serious ones Syphilis, Gonnorhea, Chlamydia, Hepatitis, Trichomoniasis, genital herpes (for those without symptoms) and HIV. The STD tests involved vary, and may require a blood sample, a urine sample or a physical swab to be taken from the urethra, vagina and/or anus. The latter of these will be a little uncomfortable for a couple of second.

The Wait for Results

You might receive results from some of the tests the same day as you took them, while others may take up to a week to be returned. As to how youll hear, many clinics will require you to pick up your STD test results (for confidentiality reasons, results via phone are rare), while others will send them via the post. In the event of a positive, medication will be proscribed to help you treat the sexually transmitted disease.

In reality, STD testing is no worse than a standard trip to the doctors once you get past the embarrassment. The staff are always professional and experienced in dealing with all kinds of sexually transmitted disease, and worrying about your illness without knowing for sure is potentially the most damaging thing you can do for you and your partner.

Bikers begin descent on South Carolina resort for rallies

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina —This weekend is the kick-off for two motorcycle rallies held annually in the U.S. eastern seacoast town of Myrtle Beach. Enthusiasts this year are expected to meet or exceed the 170,000 bikers that arrived last year in droves to the small resort town of 23,000. Festivities span two weeks, and extend again this year into the Memorial Day.

Leading off is the week-long Harley rally, followed by the next week’s BikeFest. In and around town, both day and night are punctured by the sounds of bike engines gunned and revved at stop lights and in parking lots. Groups of cycle riders dominate the streets.

“By Friday night, the front parking lot will be a full line of motorcycles to the corner.” said motel owner Ranjan Patel. The Super 8 motel takes up half a block at its location in the heart of the downtown motel strip. “Both sides [of Ocean Blvd] are nothing but bikes.” Both she and her co-owner husband agree, the influx of bikers dwarf in size the numbers of tourists who visit during regular summer months for ocean-side and family amusement park attractions.

The highly accesorised bikes, decked with chrome and polished to show it, flashed the townscape. Choppers made a showing, but road hogs dominated the ridership, often going twosome. Many rally goers arrived on the scene with SUV’s or big pickup trucks towing cargo trailers loaded with cycles.

Growth in the sheer size of the two rallies led police to make changes in the handling of traffic flow. During BikeFest last year, the mostly black crowd that came in on the heels of the largely white Harley rally the week earlier, were faced with confusion when the two-lane Ocean Blvd was made one-way.

A branch of the NAACP in Conway, the next town over from Myrtle Beach, alleged discrimination by Horry County and Myrtle Beach Police. They claimed authorities and police used an overwhelming and aggressive police presence, combined with a restrictive one-way traffic pattern, to intimidate and discourage the participants in the rally.

An injunction was issued earlier this week by U.S. District Judge Terry Wooten, who ruled that bikers at both rallies be treated the same. Myrtle Beach city lawyers immediately filed an appeal to the ruling at the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, saying “the trial court erroneously determined that the plaintiffs would likely succeed on the merits; that is, that the city of Myrtle Beach intentionally treats Memorial Day weekend tourists differently from others similarly situated because of their race.”

A plan to submit an opposition to the notice has already been announced by Michael Navarre, an attorney for Steptoe & Johnson, who represents the NAACP civil rights group. “We certainly don’t think the judge has ruled erroneously,” Navarre said, according to The Sun News.

Traffic control and safety measures were in full swing Friday morning on US-17. Both directions of the 4-lane divided highway south of Myrtle Beach had traffic cones and parking barriers set up to control traffic. Large flashing road signs on each side of the highway warned cars to use the passing lane. The warning sign flashed a message that the right lane was for motorcycle use only. Police monitored the pull-offs near a Harley dealer’s lot where popular attractions were set-up in the immediate vicinity.

Revealed How To Bypass Craigslist Phone Verification}

Filed under: Public Relations — @ 1:25 am

Submitted by: Creztor Tessel

Are you looking for information on how to bypass Craigslist phone verification? Phone verified accounts, or PVA, are now required in all of the services section and depending on the kind of IP you are using possibly every other section on Craigslist. The need for phone verified accounts is currently only limited to North America. This is because Craigslist USA is the main Craigslist classified site that gets the most amount of traffic. For anyone wanting to boost their business it makes sense that they should be posting on Craigslist USA to tap into this potential flood of traffic. The obvious question is how can you bypass phone verification? Is it even possible to get around the need for PVA or is it a complete waste of time?

In order to understand what you can do to bypass the need for PVA, you really need to first have a solid understanding of where and why verified accounts are required. Phone verified accounts are by default required in the services section. There is absolutely nothing you can do to bypass the need for PVA in this area. The services section is the only place small businesses are allowed to place ads on Craigslist. A quick look through this section will reveal that 99.9% of the ads are indeed business related and this is where you should be posting if you are a business or service provider. However, it is impossible to post in the services section without using an account that you have created and verified using a phone number. For anyone looking to bypass the need for PVA but wants to post in services, there is nothing you can do. Your only solution is to use PVA for Craigslist.

Is there no way that phone verification can be bypassed? Yes and no. Beside the services section, every other section on Craigslist can require a PVA and can also not require one. How does Craigslist make the decision if you need or don’t need a PVA in order to post? Craigslist determines if you need a PVA from your IP and nothing more. Everytime you post an ad on Craigslist the IP you used is logged. The more ads you post the more times that IP is logged. This eventually leads to flagging or blacklisting. Some IPs are flagged and when this happens the only way you can continue to post is by using phone verified accounts, even if you aren’t posting in the services section. The way to bypass this form of verification is to get fresh IPs. Fresh IPs are any IPs that aren’t already in the Craigslist flagged IP system.

Bypassing phone verification on Craigslist isn’t as simple as some would like. If you post in the services section then there is nothing you can do to bypass it and you will need to get phone verified or pva for Craigslist to place ads. If you post in other sections then the best thing you can do is try and get fresh IPs that aren’t already flagged.

Knife-wielding woman arrested after allegedly stabbing four at store in West Hollywood, California

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Layla Trawick, 34, was arrested by police for allegedly stabbing four people with two knives at a Target store in West Hollywood, California.

Paramedics arrived at the scene at 12:48 pm local time on Monday. They took one critically injured person to a local hospital and another with minor injuries. The other two did not require hospitalization and were treated on-the-spot.

An armed, off-duty police officer, Clay Grant, Jr., was able to use his service weapon to stop the accused. Captain Michael Parker praised Grant for his efforts to stop the suspect.

A shopper at the store and journalist, Allison McNamara, reported she witnessed Trawick stab the victims. McNamara said, “You could see where the knife was going into his back. The knife had ridges and a tag on it. She was going as fast and strong as she could… She looked like she was going to stab everyone there.”

Trawick is being held on US$1 million bail.

Canadian National Exhibition takes place in Toronto

Sunday, September 2, 2007

From August 17 to September 3, 2007 the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE or The EX) came back to Toronto for its 128th year. It is the largest in Canada and the fifth largest in North America.

The three day Canadian International Airshow, the horse show called “Tom Bishop’s Trick Riding Show”, and many other events were the main attractions at this year’s CNE. An estimated 1.3 million people attend the CNE every year.

The 680 News tower made entirely from Lego’s was on display, with a fence around it.

On Saturday at 1:00 p.m. was the airshow, which featured award winning aviators, including the Canadian Forces (CF) snowbirds, flying planes used in Afghanistan. The United States Air Force (USAF) also flew planes used in the military and a new F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft for its first time in an international show. A CF-18 Hornet, Canadian version of the USAF F/A-18 Hornet, 1943 Boeing Stock Stearman PT-17, and many other rare planes were also flown. Everyone could see the airshow but for a good photo and video opportunity freelance Wikinews journalist and others paid CA$5.00 to get on top of Ontario Place, across from the exhibition grounds. There was a ton of stairs to get to the top, but it was well worth it if one wanted excellent photos and video to watch with their family.

“I used to come to the air show every year with my dad … being out there flying over Lake Ontario in my hometown is unbelievable,” said Capt. Yanick “Crank” Gregoire of the CF-18 Hornet, on its 25th anniversary.

General Rick Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces, made a brief speech and talked about Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. Followed by was a pre-recorded speech made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Then the American and Canadian national anthems were played and the show begun, it even included a live pilot in a Canadian Forces plane talking through his microphone into the speakers on top of Ontario Place. The airshow was something not to be missed as the staggering planes are always best watched live.

In the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place were many vendors and people selling books, cloths, inventions, and even some live cooking shows. There was also a arts, crafts, and hobbies building, which was one of the best places to visit at this year’s CNE. Rides and attractions filled the grounds across Ontario Place.

The famous Iams-sponsored Superdogs performed dog tricks for an audience in a large area, while behind the curtains were salespeople at booths advertising and selling Iams dog food. They perform at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and other fairs in Canada.

At 5:00pm was the horse show at the Riding Academy “Horse Palace“, hosted by Tom Bishop Sr. There was a woman representing Ontario, a 15-year-old girl from Alberta representing Canada, and a man from the United States on a black horse. One of the horse riders, a champion, was from Canada but moved to the U.S. and has toured both countries. Tom Bishop Jr. stood and rode on top of two “Canadians”, the most rare and oldest horse breed in North America. The horses had to jump over a line of gas-led fire, Tom Bishop Sr. noted beforehand that horses are scared of fire.

At 9:00 p.m. was the Human Cannon Ball, from the U.S. Performed by David “The Bullet” Smith, Jr., son of Cannonball Smith, is the second person in the world that can do the “don’t-do-this-at-home-or-else!” stunt. It is their third year at the CNE. Most people came 20 minutes before to get a good spot. The shot was so loud that some had to plug their ears, and if one didn’t their heart would be beating hard. Smith jumped out like he’s done that stunt a thousand times, he did a push up on the ground and quickly ran back.

While walking to the Ontario Place parking lot, as soon as the “Human Cannon Ball” was finished, the Canadian Forces had several of their vehicles used in Afghanistan on display outside. A snowbirds plane, some LAV III’s, tanks, a helicopter, and a boat were on display. Soldiers were outside to greet and talk to the visitors, and had photos taken. A large banner was hung and old music was playing. People even signed a board beside a tank showing their support and thanks to the soldiers currently deployed. There was also a large tent with real Canadian soldiers giving away bracelets and showing actual uniforms used. They were very heavy and one soldier actually said the cloths are comfortable. It wasn’t clear which base the soldiers came from but one said that he came from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The CNE closes every night at 11:00pm.

It ends on Labour Day at 7:00pm.

Items To Discuss With Remodeling Contractors

Filed under: Barbecue And Grilling — @ 3:04 pm

byAlma Abell

Remodeling is used to bring new life to a space. This task can be an overwhelming process for your family. To relieve some of the stress, here are the things you may want to discuss with the contractors. This way, you can make plans to ensure that your stress over the remodel is as low as possible.

One item that should be up for discussion with the Remodeling Contractors is the type of chaos that will result from the remodeling project. This includes the items that are going to have to be shut off during the project, such as the water and electricity. If you intend on living in your home during the remodel, you should know the approximate times that certain systems are going to be unavailable. If you need prior notice of these services going offline, you need to tell your contractors to warn you before work occurs. Often, these items are shut off during the demolition phase for safety reasons.

Another item that should be discussed is the estimated work period of the project. This will help you determine how long you need to keep your children and pets away from the construction zone. Since the construction zone is dangerous, a schedule can be worked out to help distract children during the period the project is being worked on. This will help ensure that they stay safe during the process.

The storage of materials is another item to discuss with the Remodeling Contractors. Since these materials are often delivered early on in the project and are costly items, you should decide where the materials can be safely stored. If you don’t have adequate space or secure space in which to store it, this should be discussed with the contractors to determine the best space to the store the materials. In addition, delivery times should be discussed to help minimize storage issues.

These are a few items to discuss with the contractors. Since the remodeling process can be stressful, you should take the time to discuss any concerns ahead of time. For more information on the remodeling process or to schedule your project, check out Guedesconstruction.com. You can like them on Google+ page.

Google News seeks patent for search system that returns ‘quality’ links

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

Google News submitted patent applications both in the United States and world-wide in September 2003 for a system of ranking search returns. The patent protection filings seek to control Google’s approach that filters headlines through a complicated algorithm, including the quality of the news organization. How much of this system is currently in use by the search engine giant is unknown.

Primitive search engines are expected to organically evaluate links based on how closely the keywords typed in the search field match an object link, and how many other links are attached to the object. Then a measure of relevance is calculated before returning a reply.

It seems some measure of the work being done at Google is a reaction to search engine optimization (SEO) campaigns which can, if done effectively, skew results to certain domains. A challenge for Google is to develop its technology to nullify efforts on the dark side of SEO and link-spamming.

What also seems to be coming out from this, according to research from the Internet Search Engine Database, is that Google does indeed have a ‘sandbox’ where domains are evaluated first by a human factor before being released into its algorithms.

In its first ever Securities and Exchange Commission filing since the company went public last year, Google indicated that it intends to spend US$500 million on technology development, more than double the $177 million it spent two years ago.

The language used in the lengthy patent application itself is difficult to understand. An excellent article titled “Google United – Google Patent Examined” found below, describes some of the nuts and bolts of Google’s techniques.
